Understanding Auto Insurance

People who automatically look for the cheapest auto insurance may not actually be getting that good of a deal, because the cheapest auto insurance companies and policies usually don’t offer much coverage which means you won’t get as much as you need when you need it. Before you go to buy auto insurance online or in person, it’s important that you understand what it is that auto insurance does so you can make a good decision. The purpose of insurance is to protect you financially in the event of an accident. Some of the things that car insurance covers are damages to your vehicle, medical costs, and lawyer’s fees, depending on the type of auto insurance you have and the specific things that are covered with your coverage. Minimum Coverage Requirements While most states require a certain level of coverage, these state minimums are usually too low to actually cover your assets in the case of an accident, so make sure you are covered for the amount you actually need rather than just going for the cheapest auto insurance. Typically, you will need at least $300,000 for accident coverage, and $100,000 for each person. To make sure your proper-damage liability will actually cover the cost of a new car, you should get a minimum of $30,000 as opposed to the average state requirements of $15,000. The only type of coverage you can really get away with finding the cheapest auto insurance on is personal-injury protection, so long as you have good health insurance. Another necessary type of insurance that will help cover you if you are in an accident with someone that doesn’t have enough insurance to cover you or in cases of hit-and-run accidents is underinsured-motorist coverage and uninsured-motorist coverage. This is an important type of coverage to have because of the number of people that do not have adequate insurance. Some of the other types of coverage you may need or want to consider are collision and comprehensive. If your car is worth less than $5,000 according to the Kelly Blue Book, you probably don’t need these because you’re likely to pay more for the insurance than what you’ll get in the event of an accident. How to Find the Cheapest Auto Insurance To find the cheapest auto insurance that will give you all the coverage you need, follow these tips. - Get insurance quotes from at least four companies before making your decision. - As your state’s insurance department for a guide to buy auto insurance online and you may find companies on these lists that offer great coverage for good rates. - Always check a carrier’s customer service rating. - Check the company’s financial rating before buying insurance through Standard & Poor’s rankings. Options for a Bad Driving Record If you have a bad driving record, you may need to allow your state high-risk pool to insure you and try again to look in a year for private insurance. This public high-risk pool is much more expensive than the private insurance companies, but it may be necessary to be a part of for a while. The best way to get out of it and into the cheapest auto insurance companies is to maintain a good driving record, and try to buy auto insurance online again in a year.
